Shoulder replacement surgery removes damaged or degenerative areas of the shoulder joint and replaces them with implants. This surgery is called Shoulder Arthroplasty.
Surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff most often involves re-attaching the tendon back to its original site on the head of the humerus (upper arm bone). A partial tear, however, may only need a trimming or smoothing procedure called a debridement.
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body and is susceptible to dislocation. For patients where an injury has led to an unstable shoulder joint, stabilisation surgery may be required.
This is usually performed via a keyhole (arthroscopic) technique where damaged soft tissue is repaired on the edge of the socket (labrum). Sometimes, if there is bone damage, an open procedure is required where a bone graft is attached to the front of the shoulder joint (latarjet procedure) to restore stability.
Injuries can range from fractures to disrupted joints or tears of ligaments or tendons. Surgery may be required to treat all of the above conditions.
In total elbow replacement surgery, the damaged parts of the humerus and ulna are replaced with artificial components. The artificial elbow joint is made up of a hinge with two metal stems for the humerus and ulna bones.
Partial elbow replacement may be undertaken in specific circumstances such as fractures.
The elbow is a complex joint with multiple ligamentous and boney restraints. Following injury or dislocation, these ligaments or bones may require surgical repair or reconstruction to stabilise the elbow joint for normal function.
Nerve entrapment conditions are common around the elbow, these can lead to pain, loss of sensation or weakness. Surgical release may be required to relieve symptoms of entrapped nerves.
Inflammation of the common flexor or extensor origins around the elbow can lead to pain and weakness. Treatment can include targeted physiotherapy, injections or in rare cases surgery.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful hand condition caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. It can cause pain, loss of sensation and weakness of the fingers and hand. Surgical release of the ligament that compresses this nerve can relieve symptoms.
Trigger finger happens when the tendon that controls that finger can’t glide smoothly in the sheath that surrounds it. Surgical release of the pulley relieves clicking, catching or locking associated with trigger finger.
Arthritis is a disease characterised by damage to joints. The joints of the hand and wrist can develop arthritis due to trauma, life long wear and tear or infection/inflammation. Treatment for arthritis aims to relieve pain, preserve function and maximise quality of life. This is often a multi-modal regime of medicines, bracing/splinting, injections and surgery.
Injuries can range from fractures to disrupted joints or tears of ligaments or tendons. Surgery may be required to treat all of the above conditions.
